Chant

Aloha. Let me introduce Three Kahiko Chant. These are important chant dedicated to the Hawaiian Gods. Hawaii has four major Gods: Kāne, Lono, Kū, and Kanaloa.  Kāne is the creator of space and earth, Lono is associated with peace and agriculture, Kū is associated with war, mountains and the ocean, and Kanaloa is god of the underworld and ruler of the ocean. Three Kahiko Chant is Kauliua that is related to Lono, 'Au'aia that is related to Kū and Kanaloa, and A Ko'olau Au that honor Lono and Pele. These are so important chant because these are associated with Gods, so only people with advanced skills can sing and dance. Mahalo.

Aloha Moa, I was looking forward to reading your new posts about Hula. I also learned about these Hawaiian major gods from Hawaiian studies classes, but did not know that there were chants about these gods. It is great to know about the background of each chant since I am not able to understand Hawaiian language. Thank you for sharing!
