My plan for hula

Aloha. I've learning hula so I came to Hawaii. I was planning to study, dance hula and enjoy Hawaiian life, but I couldn't enjoy my normal life in Hawaii for a long time because the situation got worse three months after I came to Hawaii. It will be my last Oahu in July because I'm going to go back to Japan in August. I will take only online class for the fall semester. Next year, I plant to move Hilo so I want to learn hula in Hilo. Until now, I had been taught hula by Kumu from Oahu. Oahu and Hawaii Island have different dance styles. Hawaii Island's style is more powerful and attractive, so I would like to learn Hilo style next year. Mahalo.

    Hi Moa, I am very exited to read your blog thorough the rest of the semester. I am also very interested in Hawaiian traditional culture, and I am very grateful that I am here and have many opportunities to learn Hawaiian culture. I love listening to Hawaiian traditional music. It makes me so relaxed and I feel the warmth. I love Hawaiian chant too, it is very powerful, and I always get chicken skin when I hear them.
    I am sad that you need to leave during the fall semester, but I am glad you are planning to come back to Hawaii to learn more about hula. I didn't know that there were different dance styles between Oahu and big island. It is very interesting, and I would love to know how they are different from each other. If you know some differences, please share about it here with us.

  Aloha. 3 years ago, I went to Kauai Island to practice hula, and I went to Koke'e State Park, Kalalau Lookout.  When I went there, it was cloudy and I couldn't see the view. We were disappointed, but when we danced the Koke'e song, the clouds gradually disappeared. I was surprised and impressed. I love hula because it has such power!

Uniki

Aloha. Students can become Kumu Hula if they receive Uniki that means to graduate. I have experienced Uniki once. Frist, I got in the sea and purified wile chanting. Next, I went to the mountain and I danced hula there. People who can dance and chant perfectly can uniki. It was so hard but I want to uniki in the future.

Koke'e

Aloha. When I wen to Kauai Island to practice hula, I stayed at a house in Koke'e State Park. There was only one house in the depth of the mountain and no reception. I just practiced hula without a smartphone. It was very comfortable and fresh. That was a good experience for me.
